This week Year 6 have begun their DT project to design and make a wooden carousel. The project links in with our current Learning Challenge – the Victorians.
By the 1850s fairground rides were becoming popular. Early merry-go-rounds or carousels were powered by ponies or volunteers on bicycles, but by the 1860s the first steam-powered merry-go-rounds appeared.*
Our designs use a circuit with a motor to power the carousel to rotate. This also links with our current Science topic – Changing Circuits.
So so far we have designed the carousels and made the structure out of wood and card. See the process in photos here:
